Kadavu Rural Health Project

Australian AID - Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT)

This project commenced in July 1994 with the provision of design, documentation and construction services for the development of a whole island health infrastructure.

The project included the construction of a new 22-bed hospital, adjacent to the existing hospital, in Vunisea on the island of Kadavu, fully equipped, with new out patients department, x-ray unit, pathology laboratory, operation theatre suite and central sterilising department. The existing hospital building was extensively refurbished to house the hospitals administration as well as pre and ante natal services, dental clinic and community health services. A new workshop building and staff housing was provided on the hospital campus.

Community health centres, nurse stations and staff housing were either refurbished or constructed in eight remote locations throughout the Kadavu island group.
